NEXT - BALANCE
PART 1
Previously we studied color. Today we are examining pattern & texture, the sixth and last Element of Design. From the previous article, did you see your wall color immerge from your sofa color patterns?

After this article, we'll start examining the
Principles of Design. The terms and definitions of these elements are used throughout the design world. These guides will also give you an elementary understanding of the same expressions an interior designer or a photographer might use to discuss a room or a composition.

This examination along with my other articles, will give you another way of feeling the connection or disconnection to a room by recognizing the different patterns and textures in it.

  • Pattern is a repeating or an organized design and can be found not only in textiles and the surfaces of objects, but also in the arrangement of furniture, artwork groupings, accessories, and even in repeated architectural elements of the room itself. Too much pattern can be overwhelming, but in the right measures, locations and scale, pattern can add a much-needed interest to a room.
  • Texture is what we perceive a surface to be, either by its touch or its appearance. The style and mood of an area can easily be impressed by texture. It has deep emotional links, similar to color. It significantly affects the way we perceive the comfort and warmth of a room and how we imagine the temperature of a surface to be. When you choose textures for decorating, there's more to consider than just how it looks or feels. It should be easy to clean and maintain and be durable enough to withstand the use it might receive.
As with all the other elements, texture & pattern must be balanced throughout the room. Pattern and texture can turn a very bland room into an active fun filled gathering place. For fun, see what sensations you get from brushed aluminum, cashmere and stucco.
Until next time, happy Home Staging and Styling.
